My Dream To Redefine Normality

•Old Blog Posts•

I have a dream. I have a dream to redefine normality.

In today’s society we use the word “normal” on a day to day basis, but what is the “normal”, and who gets the title of “normal”?

Normal:

Definition of normal

1a conforming to a type, standard, or regular pattern

  • normalworking hours
  • He had a normal childhood.
  • the effect ofnormal aging

b according with, constituting, or not deviating from a norm, rule, or principle

  • The normal way to pluralize a noun is by adding -s.

2occurring naturally

  • normal immunity

3a of, relating to, or characterized by average intelligence or development

  • IQs within the normal range

b free from mental illness mentally sound

  • symptoms of paranoia in otherwise normal persons

  • As you can tell from above, the dictionary defines normal or normality as a intelligence level ,and a “normal childhood” otherwise known as a standard childhood. How can you make overall normality of a childhood? Each child is different and made to be in their own ways. How can you label someone normal? If you can label someone normal then what do you call the people who are not “normal”?

Those questions are what a 15 year old classmate triggered in me by saying two sentences jokingly to another classmate that  i will never forget…

” Dude you are not normal …. do you have down syndrome or something?? “

“I swear man you have done syndrome you are so retarded.”

…I was on webcam at the time that kid said those sentences and I was horrified while half the rest of the class was laughing. At this point you may be asking .. “Why Beth .. It was a harmless joke…”

THIS beautiful young lady is why…

I would like to introduce you to my beautiful down syndrome sister Hannah. What that kid didnt realize is that my sister is normal. My sister can breathe , talk, and has a heart that beats every second. My sister was just like him…. She was made uniquely in her own way just like him That brings up the questions ….

Why isn’t Hannah that kid’s version of  “normal”? Yes she may have “special needs” but are you going to just define her by that? If so then maybe take a look at her inner beauty. The inner beauty that does not bring others down, say retarded or stupid just because one is automatically put into a classification of “not normal”. Down syndrome kids, adults, babies  are probably some of the sweetest people you will ever meet on earth. They don’t define you by a accent, the way you talk, handicaps , the color of your skin, how smart you are, nor will they ever judge you on how you treat them. So why do you treat them that way? Here they are loving you and accepting you as you are but you want to judge and wrongly call someone you have never met names? Is what you’re saying uplifting , encouraging , or kind in any way…? If not then why is it coming out of our mouths? Why are we laughing at it? Why are parents allow it?

If you are going to define normality ….then define it right …

I have a dream to redefine normality as: Normality.. Is the equal and just word to describe everyone as all the same. Normality does not define you by your special needs , color of your skin, or the way you are. It accepts you however you are because every life is worth just as much as everyone around you.

to the kid who made the joke… I forgive you! i get you wanted attention but hey want the right kind of attention….? Then try kind words I can assure you they will be received much better.

What is the lesson we can learn from this …? We can learn that kind words will show love much louder than any hurtful word can.

Check out these encouraging Bible verses on kindness beloa !!!!!

Thanks for reading…

-The Romantization of Suicide and self harm.

-The 13 tapes that were delivered to each character as do it in self anger, pain, and revenge.

-The show mixes up reality and the fictional drama of suicide and processes leading up to it.

Acceptance

The one word I never thought I would feel. From the early days of middle school i have never  “fit in” or as some call “been accepted” into any kind of friend group.,youth group, or any extracurricular activities. I’ve always been looked at as the “goody too-shoos” , “the pastor’s kid “, “the one who just doesn’t click”. Towards my 6th  grade year in middle school i was taken Victim under a terrible captor …bullying. That’s right I was bullied…am I proud to say that?..No I am not. For about 3-4 years I was the girl who was bullied. I was the one they called “worthless , stupid, ugly, not enough , flawed, incapable of being liked ” I was that girl. I was never looked at with kindness, many hours were spent: crying, hurting, and praying for it to end. I couldn’t walk down the hallway without my books being thrown out of my hands or shoved into a doorway , bathroom, stalls , anything. There wasn’t a day I was accepted as me. The pain and scars of a hurting heart left me hurt, tired of “this so called person named God”, and wanting to end it all. My family tried to help the best they could but it was no use. The kids didnt care and neither did their parents. I hated going anywhere ,I hated being unliked , I hated being myself. So I changed i became that girl who never talked , shut people out of her life, and was afraid to trust for the fear of being captured again. I tried being a friend to those kids , I tried basically doing anything they said with hopes of being liked. Did any of that work? No it did not. My parents would always sit me down and tell me that I’m not the one who needs to change , I did nothing , and that it wasn’t my fault. Well I look back on that and wish I had listened to them , but I didn’t I tried to change and that left me broken. I pretty much hated trying to be who I really was and let others determine what I did or how I acted. I remember sitting on the couch one day with my parents crying over some incident and they said “Beth you will find true friends one day.” I just laughed and said yeah right. .. I mean come on..I just thought I wasn’t enough for anyone. Well….

Today May 16th 2018 , I realized I am finally loved. Now before you misread that and get confused let me explain. I am loved by my parents and family ..do not worry 😊. But when I said I realized I am finally loved i know for a fact I finally have true friends.

Let me give you a little back story …At the beginning of this school year I joined a Christian  online school. I came to this school expecting work, teachers who taught the bible along with other educational classes, but never to make friends. I had given up on that. Well turns out God has other plans..don’t you just love it when that happens lol! I quickly realized in the first day of classes that this place was different, there was not outcasts, there was no “stupid , weirdos , not accepted” kids. Everyone was accepted and loved for who they were and are. There was even other pastor’s kids..*gasps*. I enjoyed the first couple classes and really got into trying to strike up convos with some ot d the kids in my classes. Later one day I got a text wondering if I would like to be added to some group chats with kids from school. I said ok carefully unsure if they would still treat me the same. Let me just say the opposite happened i was accepted with open arms and treated with respect and compassion. No one called me the outcast no one called me a loser, weirdos or stupid they called me Beth, they called and welcomed me by who I really was. Well we fast forward to now. At this time in my life I’ve been struggling through many issues. As I have mentioned in my blog post before that my grandmother has been really ill, I have some personal family issues going on and some things happened and my parents and I decided to leave the group chats for a bit till some stuff calmed down with a couple kids who were struggling and didn’t like me at the time …that meant leaving the people I was finally learning to trust and  love back. I left them and was scared I would not be accepted back even though my parents told me I had done nothing wrong. Well I received a letter today … (Picture at the top of page) this letter was double sided with little notes written on it from the kids from those chats. They each said the same  three things that hit me hard: “We love you, we are praying for you, we miss you…” They sent Bible verses and kind words. … Little did they know that was just what I need today of all days. I cried for about two hours straight just overwhelmed with the love they had showed me…I had never experienced that before and was so overcome with emotion to know that…

I Beth was finally accepted ….

I finally have true friends who love me for who I am and love me with : respect, Humility , Christlike love ,  are willing to help , pray, and support me through life’s darkest or happiest trials

Thank you to those I call my friends not just any friends but my true friends. I believe God has placed every single one of you in my life right when I needed it.

With love and thnkfullness,

Beth

•To The Brother I Never Met…I Love You.•

•Old Blog Posts•

Dear Stephen Michael ,

We passed by your tiny, beautiful grave today… I wish I could have met you. I constantly look at the picture of your little grave. There is not a day I don’t think about you. There is not a day I don’t think about:what it would have been like to meet you, to laugh with you ,to argue with you as siblings should do. You would have been 16 almost 17 since I’m 15. We always remember your birthday in February, and at Christmas we hang your ornament on the top of the tree for all to see.Mom and dad always tell me stories about your stillborn birth. Even though they only got to hold your lifeless body for a little bit they say you were a beautiful or handsome baby. Even though you would have been born a year before me and been my older brother…but you didn’t make it….I’m happy for you. I’m not happy that you are gone from our lives without a chance to say hello or goodbye. I’m happy because you are with Him the one who always has a plan. I don’t understand why you couldn’t have lived and grown up to be a 17 year old moody teenager like the rest of us lol , but I have peace knowing that you are in the best place anyone could be at. You are running on the streets of gold laughing with the Savior of mankind.                                                      One day … I will be there. I will be in Heaven with you. I will finally be able to run, laugh, argue, and be the sister you never got to meet. one day we can create everlasting memories together. One day I can finally see your mysterious face and say that is him, that is my brother I never knew.

And finally…..One day I will hug you and know that this was all worth the wait…..

But until that amazing day …. I will think about you and be reminded of a promise. The promise of seeing you in heaven and Stephen i expect a big hug. I love you bro…

Love,

The sister you never had the chance to meet :

•Death•

One word that has a whole new meaning to me. The fear of losing someone can hit you when you least expect. The fear of that one unimaginable word seems so real. The fear that captures your thoughts, actions, and feelings. The fear of losing her….

Strong , Kindness, Humility, and sacrifice is words I would use to describe her, My grandmother. The lady who always believed in me when I couldn’t see it in myself , the lady who helped make me who I am today. Gram has always been strong in the midst of pain, heartache, and trials. She took what the devil threw her way and sent it back annihilated with the Lord’s help. Gram is a Gideon , a mother, a grandmother , a wife, and a christian. She always shows me that God conquers what seems to be the un-conquerable, but when her recovery from her back surgery took a turn for the worst i was left hurt, scared, and wanted nothing to do with God. To this day Gram is still fighting to relearn to walk, sit, stand, etc. While her constant battle with strength and learning to live without the pain that back has caused her all while the indication that death is near for her, I am and to this day learning to battle out my fears and instead of turning FROM God turning TO God’s open arms.

While visiting my grandmother in her hospital room I walked past her neighbor in the hospital to see that my papa (grandfather) was joking around with this sweet older lady and her family. You see my papa had known this sweet older lady for a good while. I walked in the hospital room introduced myself and quickly struck up a amazing conversation with this 89 year older lady who had broken her hip and was in tremendous pain but always was smiling. While in conversation over the next few days with let’s call her Mrs. Carie ,I shared with her how I was feeling and she said two phrases that hit me hard that her mother always had told her.

“Patience Cairie patience.”

” have Courage Carie Courage”

These may seem like similar phrases and just like ordinary words but those stuck in my head for days. I figured out why and I believe God used Mrs Carie to show me this important lesson.

Courage is greater than fear and Patience shows your courage to be strong even through the fear. I went searching through my Bible for any peace, while knowing that God was trying to tell me something and In the midst of pain, tears, and a hurting heart I found these four verses.

•Isaiah 66:9 says “I will not cause pain without something new to be born says the Lord.” •

•Psalms 56:3 says ” God promises something that there is something better up ahead we just have to trust him. “•

•1 John 4:4 says “God is greater than the giants you face.” •

•2 Timothy 1:7 says “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and of timidity but of power, love and self discipline.” •

These Bible verse have helped me so much and have showed me just what Mrs. Carie said “patience Carie patience.” and have Courage Carie courage.” If it wasn’t for those two phrases and support from the amazing friends i have(y’all know who you are)…..My fear of losing her would never again be as fearful as it was those days for I now know that it will never define who I am or who she is.

So after all that what am I trying to say?

Have courage my friends have Courage , and Patience my friends patience. Your fears don’t have to control you. The fear of Death can’t ultimately  control you unless you let it.

with love ,

Beth ❤
